Tunes and Dances

The universal character of popular texts and songs lies in the direct and authentic expression of common emotions. Many composers feel called upon to preserve the tradition of folk music and to breathe new life by arranging them artfully. Beethoven adapted, for example, 179 folk songs. Bartók did not only pioneer the folk music from his own country, but also made the famous Romanian dances - as the Swiss Frank Martin consulted Irish folk music.
