Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique
The first performance of the Symphony Fantastique was a disaster. Much like Berlioz’ eventual marriage to the actress, for whose affection he pined so greatly that he wrote this symphony as a volcanic expression of his desperate love.
Now however, this very first, autobiographical symphony belongs to the best that the French 19th-century repertoire has to offer. Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, by the way, is just as impressive and equally autobiographical. This percussion concerto, also a first, by MacMillan has soloist who performs all across the globe with the winner of the 2014 Tromp Concours, Dominique Vleeshouwers.
