Following the succesful productions Een meeuw (2022), Vrijdag (2021) en Noem het maar liefde (2019), Michel Sluysmans once again directs a modern interpretation of a well-known theatre classic.
In Jibbe Willems' adaptation, The Cherry Orchard (De Kersentuin) becomes a hilarious and wistful portrait of people who see the world changing faster than they can handle. The characters in The Cherry Orchard yearn for a time that no longer exists. But for those living in the past, hope for a better life remains irrevocably a dream.
Actress Lyubov (Anniek Pheifer) returns to her family's estate after a failed career in Paris. Due to high debts, the family property is in danger of being auctioned off and, together with her daughters, she does everything in her power to avoid bankruptcy. Entrepeneur Lopachin (Jeroen Spitzenberger) has a solution: if they turn the cherry orchard into a holiday park, the family is assured of a stable income. This proposal presents Lyubov with an impossible dilemma. Those who want to stay the same must change. But at what price?
With live music by multi-instrumentalist Beppe Costa, an eight-member ensemble performs a contemporary version of this timeless story about clinging to the past, fear of the future and the tragic struggle with the now.
