Theater aan het Vrijthof stands centre-stage in the cultural fabric of the city of Maastricht, the surrounding area and Euregio Meuse-Rhine. This has been achieved through the theatre’s own extensive artistic and broad-based programming (mainly in the Theater and AINSI), and involvement in Musica Sacra Maastricht, Nederlandse Dansdagen, Festival Jong and TEFAF and the City.
Theater aan het Vrijthof is ‘de huiskamer van Maastricht’ (Maastricht’s living room), a place that welcomes not only everyone living in Maastricht, but also culture and art lovers from across the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. A place where hospitality, both for artists and ensembles as well as for visitors and organisations, is central. A place where integral quality is the norm and where the objective is to guarantee inclusive access for all parts of society.
The mission and position of Theater aan het Vrijthof rests on two important pillars: on the one hand, its own programming of music and performing arts, and on the other, its receptive, facilitating activities.
The professional identity and core business of Theater aan het Vrijthof is determined by the first pillar: its own artistic and wide-ranging (theatre) programming. With this the theatre aims to; reach all groups within the population of Maastricht and the surrounding area, fulfil its provincial function as the largest cultural provider in the capital of the Province of Limburg, and together with Parkstad Limburg Theaters embody this role for the province as a whole. Theater aan het Vrijthof profiles itself as one of the major theatres in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, together with Théâtre de La Place in Liège and cultuurcentrum Hasselt, and is one of the nine major theatres in the Netherlands.
