The making of dance film is now part of the regular professional practice of dance makers. Cinematic means such as camerawork, framing and editing expand the dance maker's metier. At the same time, we notice that choreographers and dancers do not always know how to use their qualities sufficiently. Money is not the main factor in the development of a good dance film. Rather, there is a lack of experience and knowledge for developing a thorough film plan, which has as a consequence that good ideas do not always come to fruition.
With the LAB INTENSIVE, Cinedans wants to give a quality impulse to the dance film. The three-month intensive process is an initiation to the lasting substantive development of the dance film. At the same time, new options for public development and forms of financing are also being explored. The LAB INTENSIVE consists of workshops, masterclasses and a coaching program for dance makers who have the ambition to make high-quality film.
During De Nederlandse Dansdagen, Cinedans will explain the LAB INTENSIVE and the criteria for selection and further procedure will be announced.
Nienke Rooijakkers, dramaturg and education manager of Cinedans, will be leading the discussions. No experience with dance film is necessary to participate. All you need is a desire to reflect on what you see, to wonder and to investigate.
The LAB INTENSIVE commences with an illustrated lecture about the state of the art of dance film in the international field. A Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS) session is also organized in which a contemporary dance film is examined.
Visual Thinking Strategy
VTS is an accessible way to talk about art together. You discover the work according to a fixed pattern of open questions and the viewing experience is deepened. Hidden details emerge, new meanings arise. VTS has been successfully performed by art institutes worldwide for decades.
How do you watch dance film? And above all: how do you talk about dance film? In a small group of no more than 15 participants, you will dissect a film from the Cinedans archive. By attentively watching, telling and listening to each other, a conversation unfolds. One observation builds on another. Every input is valuable and there is no right or wrong.
