Maastricht's own jazz club: The Pop-up Jazzclub. A unique place where jazz musicians and listeners meet for an intimate musical experience. Once a month, Jazz Maastricht, in collaboration with Theater aan het Vrijthof, transforms the foyer and theatre hall of Kumulus into a real jazz club.
Pianist and composer Alex Koo, hailed as ‘stunningly original’ (Downbeat Jazz Magazine), is known for creating music that transcends genre boundaries, combining jazz, indie, contemporary classical music and film music with innovative freedom.
Born in rural West Flanders, he began his musical journey as a child prodigy on the classical piano at the age of 5. In his teens, he developed a passion for jazz and improvisation, earning him praise from jazz legends such as Kurt Elling, Kenny Werner and Brad Mehldau.
Alex has an impressive list of prestigious awards to his name, including first prize at the Prinses Christina Concours and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Prize. His rock-solid trio with the legendary Dré Pallemaerts on drums (Toots Thielemans, Melanie de Biasio, Bert Joris) and Lennart Heyndels on double bass (Jef Neve, Kaja Draksler) represents the very best of the Belgian jazz scene. The intuitive chemistry and artistry of the Alex Koo Trio live is almost tangible.
