'What is our life but a series of preludes?' wrote Franz Liszt as a motto in the score of Les Préludes.
Pianist Alexandra Kaptein uses it as a slogan for a Liszt programme in which - naturally - preludes are bundled with piano transcriptions of overtures. Kaptein has a thing for Liszt, he is her great source of inspiration. "With Liszt, after pain and sorrow, faith in the light always triumphs. The music carries and leads us via the divine - from darkness to light, from sorrow to exaltation." In this programme, part of the prestigious Dutch Classical Talent talent programme, Kaptein pairs two more introverted piano pieces by Liszt with piano transcriptions of two virile overtures.
