Pianist Mattias Spee sees it as his mission to breathe new life into forgotten music. In his treasure hunt, he previously unearthed music by Joseph Wölfl (a contemporary of Beethoven) and Hans Henkemans. Now it is the turn of Sergei Protopopov, one of the last great piano composers of the Romantic era.
In the 1920s, Protopopov caused a sensation with his innovative music and ideas about music, but his promising career was nipped in the bud by the Soviet regime. His work was buried in archives, performances of it were boycotted, and the composer himself ended up in a labour camp. Mattias Spee rediscovered his work and even obtained some unpublished manuscripts, which he was the first pianist ever to record. This concert offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Protopopov's virtuoso and compelling sound world.
