When Schönberg founded the 'Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen' in 1918, he wanted to give a stage to the avant-garde of the time. The association had insufficient resources to perform works in large instrumentation, so often smaller versions (transcriptions) had to be made. In that spirit, Het Collectief ordered quintet versions of two top works from the same period from the young composer Tim Mulleman: Claude Debussy's feathery orchestral work Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune and Alan Berg's masterful Op. 1.
