The andante from Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful movements in his violin repertoire. Is it the homesickness? It was one of the last works the Russian composer wrote in America, virtuosically performed in this concert by Alexandra Conunova.
Chief conductor Duncan Ward pays homage to the centuries-old Renaissance music of Sweelinck and the symphonic richness of colour of Respighi. This Italian master composer inimitably painted the gurgling fountains, Nero's Circus Maximus and sunlit harvest festivals of ancient Rome.
