Meerstemmige heiligdommen 1: Venetië
Dionysos Now!

In three concerts featuring Renaissance music, three ensembles will showcase the close connection between music and architecture in three Italian cities: Venice, Rome and Florence.
The Basilica di San Marco was the church of the republican doges. In the sixteenth century, Adriaan Willaert was chapel master there. With his Salmi spezzati from 1550, Willaert introduced a new compositional technique, the so-called cori spezzati (split choirs). This involved placing singers at different locations in the church, as determined by the composer, creating a new sense of space. And where better to appreciate this music than in the San Marco of the north, the Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek (Basilica of Our Lady)?
