Moor Mother - Schijnheilig heden

The lyrics of activist Camae Ayewa, known as Moor Mother, are about connecting the past, present and future. She characterises her work as a form of Afrofuturism: a new narrative of empowerment for black people. In her work, she combines poetry, “witch rap” and spoken word with beats, industrial noise, free jazz and video art.

Camae has released eight albums, toured all over the world (Glastonbury, Roskilde, Roadburn) and exhibited her work at venues such as the Guggenheim Museum, The Met, Carnegie Hall and documenta fifteen. She is also a professor at the USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles; research forms a large part of her musical work. On her latest album, The Great Bailout, she explores the difficult relationship between Europe and Africa and once again confronts the enduring legacy of colonialism.
