Famous Last Words

Kaat Schraepen (altviool) en Nargiz Aliyeva (piano)

31.03.2024 Kaat Schraepen (c) Simon van Boxtel (1).jpg

What does music do to a life? What does a life do to music? What life story echoes in the last notes, the last breath? Works by three composers with a rich life story are the focus of this programme:  Bizet, Schumann and Shostakovich.

Carmen was the last opera Bizet wrote before his death in 1875. He never knew the worldwide success of this now legendary opera. The story is not about Bizet himself, but about his Carmen, a gypsy girl and a true femme fatale. The narrative Märchenbilder Op.113 was written by Robert Schumann in 1851, five years before his death, at a time when his health was already deteriorating rapdily.  The work tells a complete life story.  Schraepen closes with an autobiographical work by Dmitri Shostakovich. His Viola Sonata Op.147 was his very last work.

A narrative programme that touches your heart and soul.
