Anton Bruckner's symphonies are sometimes referred to as cathedrals. As an organist, the devout Bruckner was at home in church buildings, but his symphonies are intended for a secular sanctuary: the concert hall. In addition to God, Bruckner's Seventh was also dedicated to his second god, the recently deceased Richard Wagner, who had built a sanctuary for opera in the form of the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth.
In the first half of the concert, Philzuid and Studium Chorale will perform two works by Lili Boulanger, who died at the age of 24: Psaume 24, ‘La terre appartient à l’Éternel’ (‘Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord, stand in his holy place?’); and Vieille prière bouddhique, a timeless prayer for universal peace. In between, a world premiere of the commissioned work Miserere by Renske Vrolijk.
