Sheherazade van Rimski-Korsakov
Philzuid

The fairy-tale stories of Sheherazade from One Thousand and One Nights continue to capture the imagination. She managed to prevent her ruler from killing her. Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was deeply moved by these colourful stories and set these Arabian nights to music in his masterpiece Sheherazade.
This symphonic suite takes you to a world full of adventures: Sinbad's voyages, the bustling markets of Baghdad and the intrigues of sultans and princesses. In addition to this magical work, Sergei Rachmaninoff's The Rock, a dark and atmospheric orchestral composition, opens the programme. Alexander Scriabin's unique Piano Concerto will also be performed. Scriabin wrote this work, which is rarely heard in concert halls, at a young age. His only piano concerto is characterised by passion and rare beauty. Denis Kozhukhin, the convincing winner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2010, brings this concerto to life with his expressive playing. Conductor Alpesh Chauhan leads Philzuid through this evening full of Russian romanticism and musical stories.
