Bach's St. John Passion is much more than a warm-up or the little brother of the St. Matthew Passion. It is a masterpiece in its own right, equally powerful but different from the St. Matthew Passion. Shorter and sharper, but no less moving for that.
The St. John Passion depicts a world of contrasts: good and evil, love and hate, justice and injustice. Christ appears here as a charismatic figure who inspires both admiration and fear. Expect stormy choruses, intimate arias and comforting chorales. Some say it is a bit like an opera. In Ad Mosam, Bach's passion finds an excellent advocate. In this production, the baroque ensemble once again offers opportunities to young talent and collaborates with the student choir Intonacatore from Utrecht. Together they create a fresh, compelling performance of the St. John Passion.
