Slowly but surely, attention is growing to the oeuvre of Mikalojus Čiurlionis (1875-1911), the Lithuanian composer and painter who died young: besides 300 compositions, he left as many paintings.
In his native country, he is a national hero. The symphony orchestra of the art school named after him - the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts Lithuania - is a logical advocate of his music, such as the atmospheric symphonic poem In the forest. After the interval, the orchestra showcases home-grown talent soloing in Séjourné (marimba), Vaughan-Williams (tuba), Reinecke (harp) and Bizet (violin). Limburgian baritone Vincent Kusters is also present. He has twice won the Song Prize of the Vocallis Masterclass: once as a singer and once as a song accompanist.
