RESONANCE
NDT 1

'What do we remember? What do we want to forget?' Jiří Kylián's picture-perfect Mémoires d'Oubliettes (2009) was the last work he created for Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT). With nostalgic sounds and whispers, Mémoires d'Oubliettes refers to Kylián's signature style and poetic movement language. He explores how memory works: what we forget, what is left behind and how time affects our perception of reality. After all these years, this cherished work will be danced again by NDT 1.
In The Statement (2016), associate choreographer Crystal Pite's thrilling, satirical and haunting boardroom drama is brought back to life. The NDT 1 dancers, trapped in their own rightness, fight for power and try to convince each other of their version of “the truth”. Razor-sharp movements and rakish, irresistible facial expressions make The Statement a topical and penetrating work that reveals what goes on behind closed doors in the world of those in power.
Watching Woke up Blind (2016), it is almost impossible not to be moved by the compelling voice of Jeff Buckley and the complex, emotional movement language of associate choreographer Marco Goecke. With brilliant compositions, the dancers wander further and further into an acoustic world, throwing themselves into the deep end as with a first love. Vibrations become visible in the bodies, full of uncontrollable tension and vulnerability, while Buckley's guitar riffs accelerate like an increased heartbeat.
