In Het Sluwe Vosje (The Cunning Little Vixen), animals and humans are diametrically opposed. Humans disrupt the natural balance of the animal world by exploiting animals for their own gain. Het Sluwe Vosje opposes this and uses clever tricks to fight against humans.
On the surface, this brilliant opera in three acts tells a charming story in which Leoš Janáček brings the sounds of the animal world to life, but its central theme is the relationship between nature and humankind. A fox cannot be tamed and therefore constantly challenges the human world. Composer Janáček's message is that nature, like humans themselves, is subject to an eternal cycle of death and rebirth. In this, we see both a deeply human story and a remarkably prescient commentary on climate change and humanity's impact on the planet.
Gouden Krekel winner and script writer Jibbe Willems wrote a new, sparkling Dutch translation for the Reisopera. The cast of Het Sluwe Vosje features Dutch and Flemish opera stars.
